The Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is an excellent place to visit when you are in the San Diego area. It features many attractions including Old Town, a living history museum of early California, and Mexican culture. The park contains more than 40 original adobe buildings from the 18th and 19th century which have been restored for visitors to explore. The Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is a re-creation of an 1870s California town. It’s located in Old Town San Diego and has been designated as one of the “most authentic reproductions” of a 19th-century frontier settlement. Included within this park are 24 original adobe structures that were built between 1835 -1880 up to two stories tall with courtyards or gardens. This historic site was acquired by John J. Montgomery in 1862 and then later donated for public use on December 16, 1940. The Old Town San Diego State Historic Park offers visitors a glimpse into life during the early days of southern California when Franciscan padres established missions throughout Alta (upper) California, including San Diego, Monterey, and Santa Barbara. Old Town includes the last remaining buildings of a historic settlement from the Mexican era when this area was occupied by Spanish soldiers, Catholic priests, and their Indian converts who created an agricultural village to support Mission San Diego de Alcala nearby.
