Lake Murray was created by damming Coyote Creek as part of an irrigation project that began construction in 1917. The park itself opened on March 24th, 1927 when Governor Hiram Johnson dedicated Lakeview Dam which had been completed six months earlier. Lakeview Dam also helps provide water storage for downstream agricultural lands. Lake Murray is a man-made lake and the park offers plenty of parking for visitors.
