You can walk along Old Mission Creek from Old Town Vista Point down into San Diego, or you can also take in all the sites with your vehicle for an even more up-close experience! Old Mission Dam has been designated as a historic landmark since 1996 which makes it one of the oldest dams still standing in this country. The Old Mission Dam is located on the east of Old Mission Road, just south of Highway 67. The dam was completed in 1890 and decommissioned for its original purpose (water supply) a year later when it burst due to heavy rains from the 1891 El Niño. Today, Old Mission Dam sits as an overgrown park with public restrooms and picnic tables. Visitors have access to trails that follow along both sides of Black Creek leading up to Old Mission Dam’s spillway which still stands two stories tall today. A viewing platform allows visitors to get close enough for pictures but not cross any barriers or fences. This site offers great views of San Diego County if you look past all the trees!
